by David T. Vieira on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 4:32pm· Boston, MA – Representatives David T. Vieira (R-East Falmouth) and Anne M. Gobi (D-Spencer) recently held a meeting with their peers establishing the bipartisan Massachusetts House Sportsmen’s Caucus. The meeting established the leadership team for the Caucus, with Vieira and Gobi as co-chairs. “I look forward to growing the membership in the House Sportsmen’s Caucus and to get our members out of the State House to experience first-hand the valuable resources we have for outdoor recreation and sportsmanship. It is fitting to establish the Caucus this year as it is the centennial anniversary of the Sandwich Fish Hatchery, a true gem of MassWildlife,” said Representative Vieira. “I am looking forward to working with my colleagues on a variety of issues that affect our natural environment. I am hopeful that this caucus will bring together people who value our resources and help to develop policies that will benefit generations to come,” stated Rep. Gobi. The House Sportsmen’s Caucus will serve many different purposes. It will work to preserve and promote the traditional rights of Massachusetts citizens to hunt, fish, and pursue outdoor activities. It will ensure that Massachusetts sportsmen and women have reasonable access to public lands to enjoy outdoor pursuits. Additionally, the Caucus will work to protect the investment of sportsmen and women in wildlife and fisheries management by safeguarding the integrity of user fee trust funds and license revenue. It will support efforts to enhance multiple use habitat management for wildlife and fisheries as well as recognize the importance of hunting, fishing, and other activities to our Commonwealth’s economy. The bipartisan organization is being modeled after the highly successful Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) that is active in the U.S. Congress. Founded in 1989, the CSC is one of the largest and most effective caucuses in the U.S. Congress with nearly 300 members representing almost all of the fifty states. The CSC is the sportsmen’s ally and first line of defense in the nation’s capitol promoting and protecting the rights of hunters, trappers and anglers.
